17 HMR For Sale
17 hmr for sale, the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire is a small caliber rifle cartridge created by Hornady staff member Dave Emary (initially as a personal project) and has been manufactured since 2002. This rimfire round, better known as the .17 HMR, is derived from the larger .22 WMR cartridge, with its casing narrowed to fit a .17 inch diameter bullet.
The .17 HMR, as stated earlier, was derived from the .22 WMR cartridge. The goal was to develop a rimfire cartridge that delivered comparable ballistic performance to the 5mm Remington Magnum Rimfire (5mm RMR) from the 1970s, which was the fastest cartridge globally at that period. The conclusion of the 5mm diameter (0.20 in) bullet led to the rise of the .17 inch diameter bullet, and the rarity of the 5mm RMR drove wildcatters—who were at that time advocating for the production of something akin to the .17 HMR—to adopt the .22 WMR cartridge as a basic case.
The pressure from Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Marlin Firearms compelled Hornady (along with the two rifle makers) to enter the development phase. Similar to the wildcatters, Hornady chose the .22 WMR cartridge as the foundation. After tapering the cartridge, the three companies discovered that only a slight adjustment would be needed for the barrels of .22 WMR firearms to accommodate the .17 HMR.
Efficiency
The .17 HMR was designed with one purpose: Imitate the performance of the 5mm RMR cartridge. The .17 HMR not only achieved this but also significantly surpassed the ballistic performance of its parent case.

| Bullet Weight/Type | Velocity | Energy |
|---|---|---|
| 15.5gr (1.0g) | 2,525 ft/s (769 m/s) | 236 ft.lbf (319J) |
| 17gr (1.1g) | 2,550 ft/s (780 m/s) | 245 ft.lbf (332J) |
| 20gr (1.3g) | 2350 ft/s (720 m/s) | 250 ft.lbf (340J) |
While these numbers are remarkable (nearly twice the muzzle velocity of the .22 Long Rifle, the most widely used cartridge globally), it is important to highlight that such extraordinary performance entails a considerably higher expense. Nonetheless, the .17 HMR remains more affordable than the majority of centerfire cartridges and exhibits much superior ballistic performance than many, boasting an almost flat trajectory (in contrast to the .22 Long Rifle or .22 WMR)
