Numerous ergonomic features from the Sigma and the Smith & Wesson SW99 were integrated into the M&P. The enhanced trigger weight and feel, along with a distinct takedown process (which doesn’t need a dry-fire trigger pull), aimed to differentiate the M&P from the well-known Glock pistols. The M&P is regularly issued by various police departments and certain armored transport firms.

Chambered in 9mm and .40 S&W for effective stopping power, the M&P SHIELD includes a robust polymer frame with a black, long-lasting, corrosion-resistant finish, and a stainless steel slide and barrel that are coated. Each model features a standard 3.1-inch barrel, resulting in a total length of 6.1 inches and an empty weight of 19 ounces. To expedite target acquisition and ensure smooth tracking, the M&P SHIELD features a 5.3-inch sight radius and is improved with a short, consistent trigger pull of 6.5 pounds. With a fast and noticeable reset enabled by the striker-fired mechanism, the M&P SHIELD permits multiple shots to be placed on target consistently and accurately.
